Preparing for an IUI Cycle: Step-by-Step Guide

Your Journey Toward Parenthood Begins With Preparation

If you and your partner are about to begin an IUI cycle, it’s natural to feel hopeful, anxious, and even a little overwhelmed. Whether this is your first fertility treatment or the next step after trying naturally, understanding the process can help you feel more in control and prepared.

At Dr. Richa Gangwar’s fertility clinic in Lucknow, we walk alongside couples with care and clarity, offering personalized IUI treatment tailored to your needs. Here’s your step-by-step guide to preparing for an IUI cycle, both physically and emotionally.

What Is IUI?

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is a fertility procedure where specially prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus during the woman’s ovulation window. This increases the chances of the sperm reaching and fertilizing the egg.

IUI is often recommended for:

  • Mild male factor infertility

  • Unexplained infertility

  • PCOD or irregular ovulation

  • Cervical mucus issues

  • Single women or donor sperm situations

It’s a simple, non-surgical, and low-risk fertility treatment — often the first step before considering IVF.

Step 1: Initial Consultation & Fertility Assessment

Your IUI journey starts with a complete evaluation of both partners. At Dr. Richa Gangwar’s clinic, we assess:

  • Hormone levels (FSH, LH, AMH, TSH, prolactin)

  • Ovulation patterns and cycle tracking

  • Pelvic ultrasound to assess follicle development and uterus lining

  • Semen analysis for motility, count, and quality

  • Review of any past fertility treatments or medical conditions

Once results are in, Dr. Richa will design a personalized IUI plan — often beginning with ovulation support.

Step 2: Ovulation Monitoring and Medication

Depending on your natural cycle, you may undergo ovulation induction using oral medications (like Letrozole or Clomiphene) or hormone injections to:

  • Stimulate the growth of 1–2 healthy follicles

  • Improve egg quality and timing

Regular follicular scans (ultrasounds) are done between Day 9 to Day 13 of your cycle to monitor:

  • Follicle size (ideally 18–20 mm before ovulation)

  • Uterine lining thickness (for implantation readiness)

Step 3: Trigger Shot and Timed Ovulation

Once your follicles reach the right size, you’ll receive an HCG injection (commonly called a “trigger shot”) to:

  • Prompt ovulation within 36–40 hours

  • Time the IUI procedure at the optimal fertility window

You’ll be scheduled for IUI around 24–36 hours after the shot.

Step 4: Sperm Collection and Processing

On the day of IUI:

  • Your partner will provide a fresh semen sample at the clinic (or frozen donor sperm will be used)

  • The sample is “washed” and prepared to separate the most motile, healthy sperm

  • This concentrated sperm is used for insemination

The goal is to ensure the highest quality sperm are delivered directly into the uterus, bypassing any barriers.

Step 5: The IUI Procedure

The IUI process is quick and painless:

  • You’ll lie in a relaxed position on the exam table

  • A thin, flexible catheter is gently inserted into the uterus

  • The sperm is injected in seconds

  • You’ll rest briefly for 10–15 minutes afterward

The whole appointment typically takes less than 30 minutes, and no anesthesia is needed.

Step 6: After the Procedure – What to Expect

After IUI:

  • You can resume normal activities the same day

  • Mild cramping or spotting is normal for a few hours

  • You may be prescribed progesterone supplements to support the uterine lining

  • A blood test for pregnancy (beta hCG) is scheduled after 14 days

This 2-week wait can be emotionally intense — we offer support, counselling, and stress-relief tips during this time.

Tips to Prepare for a Successful IUI Cycle

Here’s how to care for yourself before and during your cycle:

✅ Eat a Balanced, Fertility-Friendly Diet

  • Include fresh fruits, leafy greens, whole grains, and protein

  • Drink plenty of water and limit processed or fried foods

  • Avoid alcohol and smoking completely

✅ Stay Active and Rested

  • Gentle walks or yoga are encouraged

  • Sleep at least 7–8 hours each night

✅ Manage Stress

  • Try breathing exercises, meditation, or journaling

  • Focus on positivity and avoid over-researching online

✅ Follow Your Medication and Scan Schedule

  • Set reminders for injections or tablets

  • Keep your follow-ups punctual to track ovulation accurately

When to Consider Other Options

IUI has a success rate of 10–20% per cycle, depending on age and fertility factors. If pregnancy does not occur after 3–4 IUI attempts, Dr. Richa may suggest further evaluation or IVF, depending on your case.
